In the specialty area of Endocrine and Sarcoma Surgery, we primarily work with the Karolinska University Hospital. Medical Assessment and Treatment

All requests for treatment within this area starts with a medical assessment where we offer two specific services:

  1. Second Opinion (including video conference) performed by senior consultant:
    • A Senior consultant will review your case based on written submitted medical documentation (not radiology images) describing your current medical condition that you wish to discuss in terms of work-up, treatment or follow-up.
    • Based on this review the senior consultant will issue a written medical report in English, including how the Karolinska University Hospital would recommend to proceed in your case and proposed next steps. You will also be invited to a 15 min video conference with the senior consultant to go through the results. In order for our consultant to provide you with the most accurate answer and recommendation, the quality of submitted medical documentation is most important.
    • When ordering this service, a coordinator will contact you with further details regarding what and how to submit medical documentation and schedule a time for video conference. Normal lead time from completed request to delivery of written medical report and video conference is 7 days.
  1. Multidisciplinary Second Opinion (including video conference with senior consultant and includes review of radiology images):
    • Senior consultant will together with a multidisciplinary team review your case based written submitted medical documentation (including radiology images) describing your current medical condition that you wish to discuss in terms of work-up, treatment or follow-up.
    • Based on this review the senior consultant will issue a written medical report in English, including how the Karolinska University Hospital would recommend to proceed in your case and proposed next steps. You will also be invited to a 15 min video conference with the senior consultant to go through the results.
    • When processing and reviewing radiology images, this requires extra time and includes further specialists (multidisciplinary). This will increase the cost of our services slightly. Imaging is however at some cases crucial in order for our specialists to deliver a high quality medical report and recommendation for how to proceed in your case.
    • When ordering this service, a coordinator will contact you with further details regarding what and how to submit medical documentation including images and schedule a time for video conference.
    • Normal lead time from completed request to delivery of written medical report is 14 days. Please note that if images are old in relation to your medical condition or of low quality, this might limit its input to your investigation. To proceed with this service secure that your images are of recent date in regards to your medical condition.

Based on the results from the medical assessment, we will also offer you treatment based on recommended next steps.

Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery

Karolinska University Hospital has a low complication rate from post-surgical bleeding, hypoparathyroidism and vocal cord nerve damage. Diagnostically, the hospital has an internationally recognized accuracy rate. The cytological techniques that have been developed here are wildly spread all over the world.

Neuroendocrine Tumor Surgery

Karolinska University Hospital has created a team specialized in neuroendocrine tumors, consisting of endocrinologists, oncologists, endocrine surgeons, radiologists, gastroenterologists, specialist nurses and dieticians.

The annual amount of surgery performed on new patients is 50 – 70 with a lot more undergoing treatment. Diagnosis includes multidisciplinary consultations with the primary endocrinologist, oncologist, surgeon and contact nurse. Patients are well informed on all conference decisions. Neuroendocrine tumors of the gastro-intestinal tract and pancreas are diagnosed and treated, as well as more rare tumors such as paraganglioma.

Adrenal Surgery

Karolinska University Hospital is at the forefront in adrenal surgery. It means an extensive experience, which includes all three of the modern surgical techniques, apart from traditional open surgery:

  • Transabdominal laparoscopic adrenalectomy
  • Transabdominal robotic assisted laparoscopic adrenalectomy
  • Retroperitoneal laparoscopic adrenalectomy

Diagnose and treatment include:

  • Cushing’s disease
  • Primary hyperaldosteronism
  • Pheochromocytoma
  • Paraganglioma

Sarcoma Surgery

Karolinska University Hospital is at the forefront of the demanding field of sarcoma surgery. Highly specialized care and a multidisciplinary approach ensure the best results. The diagnosis is a complex process and includes multidisciplinary meetings with the oncologist, surgeon and the contact nurse. Patients are advised on all conference decisions and receive optimal, consistent handling.

The unit has extensive experience in examination, diagnosis and treatment of:

  • Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST)
  • Liposarcoma
  • Leiomyosarcoma
  • Angiosarcoma

Consultations for Clinicians

The clinic also offers consultation for clinicians via video (and other methods) in English as well as Arabic and other languages. The department offers PhD education programs for graduate students from all over the world. Clinical national fellowships for endocrine surgeons and ENT residents are offered, and are without exception highly appreciated.
